Preparing to propose is a daunting affair for the average man, and not least because selecting the perfect engagement ring seems to be an endless minefield of mystifying choices. Tradition rather exclusively dictates that the gemstone on the ring be a diamond… but that is simply the start of another maze of options.
There is a guide, however, that will lead you down the main criteria to help you decide which one to buy. This guide is known as the 4 Cs guide to diamond quality.
Using the 4 Cs
The four Cs refer to the four chief criteria that determine the quality and hence the price of a diamond. The first of these is Carat weight because it is generally the factor with the most significant impact on a diamond’s price.
Carat is a unit of weight used exclusively for gemstones and is usually abbreviated to ‘ct.’ It is equal to 200 mg or 0.007055 oz. This means that a half carat diamond weighs 100 mg or 0.0035275 oz. However, when a ring is described as having 0.5 carat of diamonds, it could mean two different things again.
Firstly, in what is usually the case, it tells you that the solitaire diamond on the ring weighs half a carat. Secondly, in an increasingly popular trend, it could be that it refers to the total weight of all the smaller diamonds on the ring, as in the case with a halo setting.
Another of the four Cs is the Cut. The cut refers to how the diamond has been shaped. Some common cuts are:
The other two Cs are the Color and the Clarity of the stone. The whiter the diamond and the clearer it is, the better.
